eTwinning National Conference and Awards 2010

eTwinning is proud to announce that this year’s National eTwinning Conference will take place during the end of May. This year the conference will be held in collaboration with EMBED 2010 during a whole week where there will be an exhibition of all the eTwinning projects and other ICT related projects created by teachers and students from all over Malta and Gozo. During the exhibition week there will also be pupils’ workshops where they will use various software and innovative technologies. Specific teacher workshops offered by eTwinning will also take place after school hours for those interested to apply. Topics of the workshops and applications will be issued in April. The conference will culminate in an award giving ceremony for the best projects. eTwinning will also be awarding the best eTwinning projects for the scholastic year 2009-2010 in Primary and in Secondary schools.

There will be two competitions: The eTwinning Collaborative Projects Awards 2010 and The Best eTwinning Project Resources Awards 2010. Each competition will have two categories: Primary Schools and Secondary Schools. First prize winners in both competitions will represent Malta in the annual eTwinning Conference 2011 that will be held abroad. More details about further prizes will be given in due course.

eTwinning Professional Development Workshop in Germany

eTwinning will be organizing a Professional Development Workshop in Germany. The Maltese National Support Service will be funding a secondary school teacher teaching German to participate in this workshop.The workshop will take place in Bonn between the 5th and 8th November 2009.

The selected candidate has to show proof of project work done during previous school years even if it was not related to eTwinning. This could be any kind of language projects: class projects, school projects, collaborative projects with other classes or Maltese schools, projects with foreign schools, Comenius projects, eTwinning projects…

Any recommendations by Head of School, College Principal or Head of Department will be considered an asset.

The selected candidate will be bound to find a project partner during the PDW in Bonn to start off an eTwinning project for the present scholastic year.

Teachers of German interested in attending are to send an email with the application form to jeannette.cardona@gov.mt by not later than Friday, 9th October, 2009.

Embed 2009 - The last day for the exhibition and workshops

Friday was the third and last day of the exhibition. A number of schools visited us and participated in the various workshops available. The exhibition was also honoured by the presence of Hons. Dolores Cristina, Minister for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport together with the Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr. Christopher Bezzina, Director General DQSE, Dr. Grace Grima and the Director Curriculum Management and eLearning, Mr. Raymond Camilleri.

Embed 2009 - The second day

More pupils from different schools around the Maltese islands once more came to visit the Embed exhibition and workshop being held at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Floriana. The pupils together with their teachers are spending an interesting day, from 9am to 1pm, visiting all the various stands set up by each college and also by some private entrapreneurs offering educational hardware and software. The pupils are also experiencing a number of hands-on workshops as we can see from the collection of photos taken today at the exhibition.

In the meantime the students’ press continued interviewing organizers and participants throughout the whole day. The exhibition was honoured today by the presence of the Director General DQSE, Ms. Grace Grima and the Director General DES, Ms. Micheline Sciberras. Both director generals have been interviewed and the recording can be found in the Embed 2009 wiki.

Embed - Best Use of ICT Practice Awards 2009

Today, at the Excelsior Hotel, the Embed 2009 exhibition & workshops was launched! This is an initiative of the Curriculum Management and eLearning Department, part of the Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education. The European theme for this year is Innovation and Creativity and thus this initiative helped in promoting this theme throughout all the schools, whilst embedding ICT tools in our teaching and learning experiences.  “eLearning is changing education and the pace of change is accelerating with each new tool,” Emmanuel Zammit, Education Officer for eLearning at CMeLD, says, “Digital tools are continuously developing to give teachers and students the potential to adapt and change the way teaching and learning occur.”

Embed - Best Use of ICT Practice Awards 2009 is an exhibition of good eLearning practices by Maltese schools, both primary and secondary schools. The 10 colleges around the Maltese Islands have participated through various activities and over 500 projects are being exhibited. eTwinning is part of this exhibition too, featuring projects which have been awarded the national quality labels in the past scholastic year.

The Primary eLearning Peripatetic teachers played an important role in this exhibition. They have been working from the beginning of the year with the school teachers willing to participate in the Embed exhibition to help pupils create various ICT resources and materials through the use of different software available to them on the classroom pcs or online freeware. Each year group focused on a particular application or software:

  • Year 1 pupils - Kid Pix Deluxe and/or Tux Paint - to create digital pictures through these painting programmes
  • Year 2 pupils - Microsoft Power Point - to create presentations
  • Year 3 pupils - Microsoft Photostory - to create short video clips
  • Year 4 pupils - Picasa - to manipulate and edit digital photos and create posters or collages
  • Year 5 pupils - WordPress - to create a collaborative blog
  • Year 6 pupils - Audacity - to create a radio programme

Secondary school participated on their own initiative and contributed their material for the exhibition.

Apart from the 10 stands which were set up by each college, some private companies offering educational ICT products and services are also present. These include stands for interactive white boards, interactive tables and educational games such as game consoles or robots.

 The Design & Technology section also put up their own stand with various digital technology. All the stands are interactive. A number of pupils from all the schools around the Maltese Islands have been invited to visit the exhibition and take part in the various activities around.

In addition to the exhibition there are also some workshops where the pupils are having hands on experience with some software or hardware exhibited.

Amongst these workshops, there are the Claymation and Stopmotion Animation workshop and the Photostory workshop sponsored by eTwinning.

This event will be held on three consecutive days with more than 750 pupils visiting the exhibition and participating in at least three formal workshops.

On Thursday evening the Awards cermony will also be held. This cermony will award the best use of ICT across the curriculum which have participated in Embed 2009 and best collaborative projects in eTwinning.

eTwinning had launched the application for the National Awards in the end of April and during this cermony the best three in the primary and in the secondary category will be awarded. National Quality Label Certificates will also be awarded to those eTwinners who have obtained this award.

A team of students from two secondary schools are interviewing and filming participants and organizers and reporting about the exhibition through edited videos on the Embed 2009 wiki.

eTwinning Seminar for Kindergarten Assistants

On Monday 31st March 2009, a seminar was organized at the eLearning Centre for Kindergarten Assistants.  Due to the large number of Kindergarten Assistants applying to attend, two labs had to be used on Monday and a repeat seminar was also organized on Thursday 2nd April 2009.

Kindergarten eTwinning Workshops

An eTwinning afternoon seminar for Kindergarten Assistants will be held on the 30th March 2009. This seminar will take place in Lab 3 at the eLearning Centre in Floriana. This event is aimed for both beginners to eTwinning and for those who are actively involved in this action.

The seminar will deal with what eTwinning is and how to get registered to find European contacts. Apart from the eTwinning tools, there will also be two workshops about how to use two creative software which are available online for free.

Each participant will be given an eTwinning 2GB pendrive, an eTwinning mini-mouse and eTwinning stationery.

A maximum number of 20 kindergarten assistants will be accepted due to lab restrictions.
